What Is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a facility that allows you to switch your mobile service provider while keeping your existing phone number. TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) mandates that all operators support this, and the process is straightforward once you know the steps involved.

Porting to Jio means you can take advantage of Jio's 4G network coverage and data plans without the inconvenience of informing everyone you know about a new number.

Before You Begin: Eligibility Check

Before initiating a port request, make sure you meet these conditions:

  • Your number must be active (not deactivated or suspended).
  • You must have been on your current operator for at least 90 days.
  • There should be no outstanding dues or active legal/contractual lock-ins on your account.
  • Your phone must support 4G VoLTE to use Jio's voice calling service.

Step-by-Step Porting Process

Step 1: Generate Your Unique Porting Code (UPC)

Send an SMS from your current number to 1900 in the following format:

PORT <space> your 10-digit mobile number

Example: PORT 9876543210

You will receive an 8-character Unique Porting Code (UPC) via SMS. This code is valid for 4 days (15 days if you are in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, or the North East).

Step 2: Visit a Jio Store or Authorised Retailer

Take the following documents to your nearest Jio store or authorised retailer:

  • Your UPC code (as received via SMS)
  • A valid photo ID proof (Aadhaar card is most commonly accepted)
  • A valid address proof
  • One recent passport-size photograph

Step 3: Fill in the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF)

At the store, you will be asked to fill in a porting request form. Provide your details accurately — any mismatch between your documents and the form can delay the process. Choose your preferred Jio prepaid or postpaid plan at this stage.

Step 4: Receive Your New Jio SIM

The retailer will issue you a new Jio SIM card. Do not insert it in your phone yet — your old SIM will continue to work during the porting window.

Step 5: Wait for the Porting Window

Once the request is processed, porting typically completes within 3–7 working days. You will receive an SMS from your current operator informing you of the scheduled porting date and time (usually between 11 PM and 5 AM to minimise disruption).

Step 6: Activate Your Jio SIM

After your old SIM stops working, insert your new Jio SIM. Your number will now be active on Jio's network. If needed, call Jio customer care at 199 to complete the activation.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • UPC not received: Try again after a few minutes; ensure you are sending from the number you want to port.
  • Porting request rejected: Usually due to outstanding dues with your old operator — clear these first.
  • SIM not activating: Contact Jio customer care at 199 or visit the nearest Jio store with your documents.

Key Things to Remember

  1. The UPC expires in 4 days — act quickly after receiving it.
  2. Keep your old SIM active until the porting is confirmed complete.
  3. Porting is free of charge — you should not be asked to pay for the process itself.
